Easy to Make American Fried Chicken

Creating a Kentucky style fried chicken is so easy.  Grab your ingredients and then follow our simple 3 step process – prepare, coat and cook!

Ingredients

  • Chicken – use fresh chicken and choose your favourite pieces (bone in or out)
  • 2 eggs (medium or large)
  • ½ cup of milk
  • Vegetable oil – quantity to suit your deep fryer/high sided frying pan
  • American Fried Chicken Coating – 2 level tablespoons per portion of chicken (or if making nuggets use 1½ level teaspoons per piece)

Step 1 Prepare

  • Preheat your oil in the deep fryer or frying pan to or 150oC or 305o F
  • Take the 3 bowls and in the first bowl, crack 2 eggs and pour in ½ cup of milk. Whisk until smooth. You have now created an egg wash.
  • In the second bowl place 2 level tablespoons of American Fried Chicken Coating per portion of chicken (if making chicken nuggets use 1½ level tablespoon of coating per nugget).
  • Leave the third bowl empty as this will be used when coating the chicken.
  • Remove skin from the chicken pieces.

Step 2 Coat

  • Dip each portion of chicken into the American Fried Chicken mixture to coat it.
  • Next dip the coated chicken into the egg wash, making sure you cover all of the chicken.
  • Lift the chicken out of the egg wash and dip it back into the American Fried Chicken Coating and cover it generously with a second coating. Once coated to your satisfaction, place chicken into the third bowl.
  • Repeat this process until all of your pieces of chicken are coated.

Choose your cooking method

  • For best results we recommend using a deep fryer but our coating still tastes fabulous when cooked in a frying pan.
  • If using a frying pan, please ensure that there is sufficient space above the oil to ensure the oil does not spill over the sides when the chicken is added.
  • Cooking appliances vary considerably, please adjust cooking times as necessary.

Deep Fryer Method

  • Set the oil temperature to 305o Fahrenheit or 150oCelsius
  • Lift basket out of oil
  • Once the oil has reached the set temperature, use tongs to carefully place chicken portions into the basket one piece at time (do not allow chicken to portions to touch each other to avoid them sticking together).
  • Gently lower basket into fryer.
  • After 20 seconds, lift basket out of the oil and gently move each piece of chicken, (this stops it from sticking to the basket).
  • Lower the basket into the oil again and cook for 10 -12 minutes until golden (if making chicken nuggets cook for 5-6 minutes until golden brown).
  • Remove the basket from the oil and using the tongs carefully lift the chicken out of the basket and place on a serving plate lined with kitchen roll to blot up any excess oil.
  • Allow cooked chicken to rest for 10 minutes as this allows the chicken to become more succulent and fully absorb the flavour of the coating.

Frying Pan/Saucepan method

  • Set the dial on the stove to medium 305oF or 150oC (if your stove has numbers on it set it to the middle number. If it has high and low settings set the dial in the middle).
  • Fill the pan with enough oil to cover at least half the portion of chicken (about 5cm / 2 Inches). Allow the oil to heat for at least 5 minutes.
  • Using tongs carefully place chicken portions into the oil, one piece at time until the pan is full. (Do not allow chicken to portions to touch each other to avoid them sticking together).
  • After 20 seconds gently move each piece of chicken to stop it sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  • Cook for 10 -12 minutes until golden and turn each piece after 5 minutes (if making chicken nuggets cook for 5-6 minutes and turn each piece after 3 minutes).
  • Using tongs, carefully lift the chicken out of the pan and onto a serving plate (lined with kitchen roll to blot up any excess oil).
  • Allow cooked chicken to rest for 10 minutes as this allows the chicken to become more succulent and fully absorb the flavour of the coating.
